Counseling and Guidance
The Guidance Office consists of the following personnel with their areas of responsibility:
Jamie C. Johnson – School Counselor
Angela Hooks – College & Career Coach
Theresa Pressey- Registrar
Swainsboro High School Guidance Office is designed to be the primary source of student services. Our School Counselor is a source of social, emotional, and academic support for all students, helping them to form healthy goals, mindsets, and behaviors. Our College and Career Coach works mainly with 11th and 12th grade students on academics, Dual Enrollment, Accelerated Career Diploma, graduation, scholarships, and post-secondary choices. In addition to academic and career planning, the Guidance Office serves as a referral system to agencies within the community that address health, psychological, and social needs.
- GOOGLE CLASSROOM: Each student should join the Google Classroom for their specific cohort. Information, announcements, deadlines and more are posted regularly.
- SCHOOL EMAIL: It is important that students check their email daily and be willing to engage in email communication with the Guidance Office, teachers, and other school personnel.
- GA FUTURES: All students must create an account with GA Futures (https://www.gafutures.org/) as freshmen. They will use this account throughout high school for college/career planning.
ADVISEMENT
All students will be assigned an academic advisor to assist in developing and executing an educational plan. This will provide the student with consistent encouragement and help throughout high school. Advisement sessions will be held monthly and students will complete activities that support their academic, social, and emotional well being.
The School Counselor and College & Career Coach are available to advise students any time, even if it is outside of the Advisement period.
AWARDS, HONORS AND SCHOLARSHIP (see ECS 2025-2026 Student Handbook)
COLLEGE & CAREER PREP
The PSAT/NMSQT and ASVAB are given each fall and the ASVAB is given again in the spring to help students prepare for next steps in college or careers.
Assistance in registering for the SAT/ACT is available from the College & Career Coach. Fee waivers are also available for 11th and 12th grade students.
Information about scholarships is available throughout the school year and is posted in the senior Google Classroom , complete with directions and deadlines.
Students have access to their YouScience accounts and will be required to complete yearly activities in Advisement that will help them make decisions about their future based on individual strengths. This platform will also enable students to explore careers and colleges based on the results of these activities.
DUAL ENROLLMENT
Taking courses at East Georgia State College or Southeastern Technical College is an option for students who meet specific criteria and follow specific steps. These courses are weighted more heavily than high school classes and the funding is covered through the State of Georgia. Informational meetings are held each year in the fall and spring for the upcoming semester. The meeting must be attended by both student and parent to begin the process of registering for classes.
GRADUATION EXERCISES
To participate in graduation exercises, students must comply with the attendance policy established by the Emanuel County Board of Education. They must also comply with all graduation-related instructions, including attending graduation practice, ordering caps/gowns, and meeting all other senior responsibilities. All debts owed to the school must be cleared prior to graduation.
Noncompliance with any of the above-stated responsibilities may void all graduation rights and privileges of the student. Students who lack units of coursework may attend school as a regular student during the next school term and upon successful completion of remaining coursework will be eligible to receive the appropriate diploma in the graduation ceremony at the end of the school term in which course work is accomplished.
Participation in the graduation ceremony is at the discretion of the administration and may be revoked by school administration for conduct which may be perceived as disruptive to the school environment. Records of discipline, attendance, and other information may be used to determine participation in the graduation ceremony.

STUDENT INFORMATION
Each student is given a student information sheet to be taken home and completed by a parent/guardian. This sheet provides contact, transportation, emergency, and medical information as well as names of individuals who are authorized to check the student out of school. It is the responsibility of the student to keep these forms updated and accurate throughout the school year.
TRANSFER GRADING
A numerical (65, 85, etc.) transfer is counted, per se. A letter grade (A, B, etc.) is converted to a numerical grade using the grading scale shown on the transfer records. If no grading code is shown, the Emanuel County grading scale is to be used.
